The Digital Millennium Copyright Act gives copyright owners a way to ask websites to remove material that infringes their work. Even a small directory can receive one.
What a valid notice contains
- The copyrighted work that is being infringed
- The exact URL of the material to remove
- Contact details for the person filing
- A good-faith statement that the use is not authorized
- A statement that the information is accurate, signed by the owner or their agent
How base31 handles requests
base31.org accepts takedown requests through a dedicated form at dmca.base31.org. Every request goes straight to the moderation inbox, where it is reviewed by a person before anything is removed.
Be fair to both sides
Takedowns should be used for real copyright problems, not to silence criticism. Filing a knowingly false notice can carry legal consequences, so only submit one when you own the work or represent someone who does.
